Rob Sand made a stop in Washington County as part of his 100 town hall tour across Iowa and his campaign for Governor.
Sand, the current state auditor and a Democrat seeking the role of governor, was at the KC Hall in Washington on Monday from 9 to 10 a.m.
Ahead of the event, Sand shared with KCII News what he’s hearing on the campaign trail, “I think a lot of people are focused on rising costs. I keep hearing about double-digit increases in healthcare premiums. I think people are very frustrated with the state of the economy. A lot of people are unhappy with the school vouchers program, and the literal complete lack of oversight that is even allowed in the program. For example, we tried to audit $100-million that was spent last year, and they wouldn’t allow us to. Those are some of the big ones.”
When asked how his time as State Auditor has set him up to potentially fill the role of Governor, Sand stated, “I think people want someone who is going to take government accountability seriously, and who is also going to take public service seriously. We have senior leadership that I have put into those positions that are Independent and a Republican, who had actually made campaign contributions to my opponent in 2018. We worked together to find a record amount of misspent money in my first term. We also started a government efficiency program that is so good that it’s been copied in two other states. I think people want someone who wants people to work together to focus on things that are good for everyone in the state, and that’s what we have been doing.”
The tour is an opportunity for Sand to hear directly from Iowans about their top concerns, and for Iowans to hear directly from Sand about his vision for the state. Monday, Sand also visited Jefferson, Van Buren, Henry, Des Moines, and Lee counties.
