October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and on Tuesday, the Washington City Council heard a Mayoral proclamation designating the observance in the City of Washington.

Mayor Millie Youngquist read the proclamation, “DVIP/RVAP has worked to end violence and abuse in intimate relationships for more than 45 years through the collaborative partnerships of advocates, volunteers, local municipalities, criminal justice, health and human services, and private citizens.” In honor of the month, the Washington Police Department will be wearing purple ribbons on their lapels and have purple ribbons on their vehicles.

Purple Thursday will be held on October 23rd, and is a day where people wear purple to show their support for survivors of domestic violence. Every year advocates, survivors and supporters wear purple to stand in solidarity with victims of domestic violence.
