The Winfield-Mt. Union football team scored their first win and made a statement Friday, coming back to hand the English Valleys Bears their first loss of the season 28-26. EV started hot, scoring the first two touchdowns to lead 14-0 after one. The Wolves answer was swift in the second, back-to-back scores, with two point tries each to lead 16-14 at half. After break, each team scored a touchdown in each quarter the rest of the way with the Wolves putting together a late drive and stop to secure the win. This week, WMU head football coach Scott McCarty joined the KCII Radio Coaches Corner to talk about the game-winning plays and his standouts. “They got the ball, only a two or three play drive and they bust a big run and score to take the lead. Now we get the ball. Couple of short passes. We’re running the two-minute-drill proficiently. We’re inside the 20, send some guys on a route and quarterback Cody Milks pulls it down, pretty fantastic scramble, makes a couple of guys miss, runs through contact inside the three-yard-line and scores to put us ahead. We got EV down to seven seconds, fourth and 10, they threw up a prayer and we were able to intercept it. Very reminiscent of our win over Don Bosco in 2023, and it’s ironic because in that game it was a Milks with the interception and this game it was a Milks with an interception that wins it. Cruz Hagmeier and Kale Kerr come in, and did a really good job for us. Collin Anderson does a really good job for us as a middle linebacker. Our guys stuck with it, read their keys, and made big plays when they needed to.”

EV won total yards 437 to 266, including 341-48 rushing. The Wolves won through the air 218-96. Each team forced two turnovers. Cody Milks finished with 241 all-purpose yards, 18 of 31 throwing for 201 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Max Edwards made six catches for 74 yards including a 32 yard score. Nicholas Sparrow reeled in a 34 yard touchdown. Collin Anderson led the defense with 10 tackles two for loss. Wyatt Palmer recovered a fumble, Tayson Samuels and Milks an interception each. The Wolves are 1-2 on the year and EV drops to 2-1. WMU hosts Wayne for Homecoming Friday.
