Tonight rivalry football is featured on KCII when the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks welcome the Sigourney-Keota Cobras to Wellman for Homecoming. The Golden Hawks have split their first two contests of the year, a win over rival Washington and a loss at top 10 Alburnett. The Hawks road loss to the Pirates was a 42-37 back and forth affair in which they had a pair of second half leads before Alburnett scored the game-winning points with a minute to go. Quarterback Brooks Weber led the Golden Hawks with a 22 of 46 night for 351 yards and four scores, one each to Hudson Ehrenfelt, Dylan Humphrey, Nolan Jergens and Kaden Kos. Defensively Kos leads with 12 tackles, three for loss and a sack. To go with the two takeaways against Alburnett, Humphrey has an interception and Jack Sorrell a fumble recovery. Mid-Prairie ranks in the top 10 of Class 2A in 16 different categories. This week, Mid-Prairie head coach Daren Lambert talked about his keys against SK. “We’ve learned that our guys are going to fight no matter what situation they’re in. One thing we focused on this week is a fast start. We’ve had to claw back in to two different ballgames so far this year against two tough teams, and that takes a lot of energy out of the guys. One that we won and one that we didn’t. (With SK), they are who they are, and they’re tough. They come in 0-2 but they played two tough teams just like we did. They are going to be hungry and physical. They have had our number the last two years. They know what they’re going to do, we know what they’re going to do but you still have to stop it. It’s a style of football that demands you to do your job and do it every single play or they take advantage. We have to be prepared.”

Sigourney-Keota is 0-2 after losses to Prairie City Monroe and Wilton by a combined 66-32 score. Week two against the Beavers, the Cobras led 7-6 at half before falling 19-14. SK lost total yards 256-217, but won on the ground 176-167. The Cobras lost turnovers 3-2 with Lance Walden recovering a fumble and Blake Baker intercepting a pass. On offense, Brayden Wood was three for six throwing for a touchdown and two interceptions. His scoring throw was a 20 yarder to Ayden Galindo. Ike Molyneux had 27 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown. Chase Clarahan had six tackles, one for loss. This season, SK scores 16 per night and gives up 32 with 244 yards per game, 162 rushing and 82 passing. The Cobras are -4 in turnover margin. Individually, Wood is the leader at three of nine throwing for 41 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions. John Berg leads with three catches, 84 yards and a touchdown. Molyneux has a team best 167 yards and a touchdown on 46 carries. Berg is also the leading tackler with 12 stops. Baker has two takeaways. SK ranks in the top 10 of 1A in six categories. This week, Cobra head coach Jared Jensen talked with KCII sports about the keys against Mid-Prairie. “If we can block things consistently on offense, we’re in good shape, when we’re not very efficient, we tend to struggle. That’s been something that’s been hammered home this week. The physicality with which we need to play. Getting the guys ready for a game during the week. We always practice hard but we amped this thing up. The guys got after it this week and we feel pretty good. We can build off of our defense so far this year. When we hold teams to 19 points, we should win the game. Last week our defense kept us in the game and we’re going to have to rely on them. Offensively, we have to get things figured out. We’re taking steps in the right direction. (Against Mid-Prairie) the turnover battle is what to watch, year in and year out it’s a close tough game, I think the turnover battle is what decides it.”

SK is 13-8-1 all-time in the series, winning four of the last five including 21-14 in Wellman a year ago. You can hear all of the action live tonight on AM 1380, FM 102.5, the KCII 2 App and KCIIradio.com, beginning with the La Morenitas Pregame Show at 6:30p.m. And kickoff at seven in Wellman.
