A Washington farm was recognized as both a Century and Heritage farm by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.

The Wenger farm located at 3220 Wayland Road owned by Ada and Arthur Potratz was among 449 Iowa farms to receive the designation by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President Brent Johnson.

The program celebrates farms that have been owned by the same families for 100 and 150 years. For Heritage farms, the farm must have been in the owner’s family for at least 150 years, while for Century farms, it must have been in the family for at least 100 years. In either case, the land must be at least 40 acres.

The Century and Heritage Farm recognition program is made possible through a partnership between the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. The families were recognized at a ceremony on Thursday in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the state fairgrounds.
