At KCII we’re counting down the top 10 biggest stories in Washington High School sports for the 2024-2025 academic year. At number seven is the 19 athletes who helped track and field win nine state medals.

Washington track had a solid spring that included being the runner-up for both boys’ and girls’ team scoring at the Southeast Conference Championships.

The boys were winners twice as a team this season and finished fourth at their Class 3A state qualifying meet in Mount Vernon, while the ladies had a superb spring with three team victories and took fifth at state qualifying, leading to well over 30 total athletes that would represent the Demons at the Class 3A state championships in Des Moines.

It was on the famed blue oval of Drake Stadium where the Washington boys made one more big splash, winning eight medals on their way to a top-20 finish in team scoring at the state meet.

Junior Josh Anderson would bring home half of that medal haul, adding to his impressive career with a third-place finish in the 200-meter wheelchair race and fourth place in the wheelchair 100, 400 and 800.

Sophomore Greyson Hartman would finish up a stellar season that included conference championships in both throwing events by medaling in both at state, taking third in the discus toss and fourth in the shot put.

Senior Tyler Alderton would wrap up his career by taking eighth place at state in the open 800 meters and helping Washington finish eighth in the 4-by-800-meter relay alongside senior Logan McDole, junior Carson Ryan and sophomore Sawyer Tschantz.

Junior Leighton Messinger would grab the lone state medal for the Demon girls by ending up sixth in the 400-meter hurdles, concluding a season that included conference medals for her in multiple hurdles races.
