It’s the second week of our countdown of the top 10 sports stories at Mid-Prairie High School from the recent year, and we enter the top five with a look back at Golden Hawk girls wrestling. It was a historic season for the Hawks under first-year head coach Brock Moore.
Mid-Prairie put together an 11-7 dual record during the regular season and brought home the hardware during the championship portion of their year. At the River Valley Conference Championship meet at West Liberty in January, the Hawks won their first ever RVC team title, finishing with 212.5 points, beating second place Anamosa by 12. Austyn Sexton, Gabby Gingerich and Ashley Farrier were all individual RVC Champs. Mardie Berry, Cassie Trimpe and Ellie Callahan finished as runners-up and Destina Moyle, Emmerson Moore and Layken Lee were third.
The Hawks parlayed that success into momentum for the Super Regional State Qualifier meet at Solon. Mid-Prairie finished third in the field of 15 teams with 159 points. A trio of Golden Hawks advanced to the 2025 state tournament with runner-up performances including Gabby Gingerich, Ashlee Farrier and Layken Lee. Austyn Sexton and Mardie Berry finished third. Farrier led the group of Golden Hawks at state with a 4-2 tournament in Coralville and fifth place finish at 130lbs.
Other highlights for the Hawks included Farrier breaking the all-time program wins record in November with her 81st, and scoring her 100th victory at West Branch in January, becoming the first Golden Hawk to accomplish the feat. Sexton also set the career reversal record. As a team, the Golden Hawks were one of only 26 schools recognized by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association as an Academic All-State team, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Individually, Farrier and Gingerich were both named IWCOA Academic All-State.
Tuesday, we continue with our fourth spot on the countdown, a look at Golden Hawk Archery.
