After a phenomenal season, two of the brightest stars for Washington Demon softball are earning more postseason accolades, as junior Leighton Salazar and senior Ella Greiner have been named first-team all state in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
Salazar’s third straight all-state selection comes after another season where she rewrote the Washington record books. The shortstop matched the single-season school record and led all of Class 3A with 72 hits, finishing with a .522 batting average and stroking 15 doubles as well to finish top 10 in the state in both categories.
Salazar would score a school-record 59 runs and racked up a school-record 54 stolen bases, both figures in the top five in 3A, and she would add 34 runs batted in from the lead-off spot in the Demon lineup.
Greiner’s second career all-state nod comes after a superb senior season at the plate. The outfielder led Washington with 46 RBI and hit .463 with another 46 runs scored, 10 doubles and three home runs.
Greiner was also named All-Tournament Team at the Class 3A State Championships after going four-for-six with a double, a run and one RBI in two games at Fort Dodge, as the Demons reached the state tournament for the first time in 12 years to cap off a season where they went 29-11.
