Following recent rain, soil moisture levels in southeast Iowa have improved over the last month. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a month ago subsoil moisture in southeast Iowa had nearly half of the district rated as short with 34-percent of topsoil rated at short and 10-percent very short. This week’s crop progress and condition report shows southeast Iowa’s subsoil moisture rated at seven-percent surplus, 71-percent adequate, 20-percent short, and two-percent very short. The topsoil moisture levels in the district were rated at 16-percent surplus, 71-percent adequate, 11-percent short, and two-percent very short.

Overall, farmers in southeast Iowa had 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork last week due to wet and rainy conditions.
