Area businesses and individuals have the opportunity to support local 4-H and FFA students and purchase livestock at the Washington County Fair. The annual livestock auction begins at 8:30 a.m. in the main show ring on Friday morning.

The annual tradition is a time for livestock projects to be sold to the public and is an investment in the efforts of local youth. Students have raised the livestock, culminating in months of work. During that time students learn about raising animals, and the time and energy that goes into the process. The funds from the auction go back to the students who raised the animals.

According to Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Iowa’s 15,000 4-Hers across the state in livestock projects produce about 17 million pounds of meat.

Auction orders will be available at 7 a.m. at the county council pavilion. The livestock will enter the ring in the following order: swine, cattle, sheep, goats, rabbits, and poultry.
