For the first time since 2013, Washington Demon softball is the undisputed Southeast Conference champion. Washington beat long-time rival Fairfield 15-2 last night to officially wrap up an outright league title.
The Demons wasted little time taking control of the game with five runs in the first inning and another eight in the second, ending the game early after four frames.
Senior Ella Greiner and sophomore Colbie Greiner had three hits and two runs scored each for the Washington lineup while combining for five runs batted in. Bella Salazar picked up three RBI on two hits and scored one run, while fellow senior Halle Cuddeback drove in a pair and scored twice on one hit.
Junior Leighton Salazar crossed home plate twice to go with a base hit as the Demons, ranked ninth in the state in Class 3A, improve to 12-0 in conference play and 21-6 overall. After the game, head coach Ben Obermann told KCII Sports that his team was dialed in to accomplish a long-standing goal of a conference championship.
“They’ve been wanting this for a long time, this senior group especially” Obermann said. “We’ve been close [and] it’s been a goal for several years, and we finally got over the hump.”
“Right from the get-go, I saw that we had good energy as we were hitting today. [The] girls were locked in in the [batting] cages, and we came out swinging really, really well today.”
Washington baseball would not have the same good fortune, falling to Fairfield 15-1. Six runs in the first inning put the Demons behind the eight-ball early, and five more in the fifth would allow the Trojans to end the game early.
The loss drops Washington to 4-13, including a 2-10 mark in the Southeast Conference. The Demons will play again later today at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, with the first of a pair being against Williamsburg.
