It was a tough night at the office Tuesday for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team as they dropped a non-conference contest at No. 11 in Class 4A Grinnell 11-0 in four innings. The Tigers scored in each of their three at-bats with one in the first, seven in the second and a three-run third. The Hawks were out hit 6-3 on the night. Mid-Prairie issued five walks and made three errors. The Hawks drew one walk. Kylee Bond led the charge for Grinnell with a two for two night that included a homer, five RBI and three runs scored. Rylie Imhoff was the winner throwing two innings of two hit ball with two Ks. The Hawks had one hit each from Sophie Miller, Kyla Karnes and Sophia Puttmann. Jersey Jergens drew a walk. Alena Snider took the loss in three innings, surrendering five hits and six earned runs. The loss dropped Mid-Prairie to 6-11 while Grinnell improved to 20-3.

Mid-Prairie will have a chance to bounce back this weekend at the Linn-Mar Tournament which gets underway Friday. The Hawks come into the event hitting .273 as a team with a .378OBP and .357 slug on 98 runs, 120 hits, 85RBI, 65 walks and 74 strikeouts. Sophie Miller leads with a .490 average on 25 hits. Kadence Grout has 17 RBI and Elise Foster 17 runs scored. In the circle, Grout, Alena Snider and Naomi Wadsworth have a collective 6.98ERA, 2.14WHIP, .310 opponent average, 145 hits, 98 earned runs, 65 walks, and 40 strikeouts. The Hawks open the tournament with home team Linn-Mar. The Lions are 21-4 this season and ranked No. 2 in Class 5A in the latest poll from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. They hit .333 as a team with a .386OBP and .472 slug with 143 runs, 183 hits, 115RBI, 47 walks and 68 strikeouts. Emily Koranda is the leader with a .387 average on 24 hits. Emma Barnes has driven in 20 and Brynna Gander has scored 20 times. In the circle, the Lions have Koranda leading with an 11-1 record, 0.77ERA, 0.73WHIP, .143 average, 39 hits, eight earned runs, 14 walks and 128 strikeouts. Linn-Mar has won the last three between these schools including 4-1 in 2022. Other teams in the field include Alburnett, Ankeny, Dallas Center Grimes, Durant, Fort Dodge, Iowa City High, Johnston, Lisbon, Mount Vernon, North Linn, North Scott, Northeast Goose Lake, Pleasant Valley and Cedar Rapids Xavier.

The Golden Hawk baseball team will play a neutral site game at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids against the Cascade Cougars from the North Division of the River Valley Conference. The Hawks come in hitting .266 as a group with a .393OBP and .353slug with 126 runs, 147 hits, 103RBI, 91 walks and 113 strikeouts. Tatem Telfer is the individual leader at .421 with 20RBI. Brooks Weber has 25 hits and 17 runs scored. On the mound, the Mid-Prairie ERA is 3.01 with a 1.46WHIP, .223 average against, 121 hits, 61 earned runs, 86 walks and 166 strikeouts. Brady and Brooks Weber and Tatem Tefler are 12-2 with a 1.50ERA.

Cascade is 12-10 this year, 5-5 in the North Division. The Cougars hit .315 collectively, with a .413OBP and .393 slug on 147 runs, 185 hits, 115RBI, 86 walks and 91 strikeouts. Individually, Nathan Schockemoehl has a .364 average and 24 hits, Cooper Hummell has driven in 18 and Mick Hoffman has scored 22 runs. On the mound, the Cougar ERA is 3.54 with a 1.36WHIP, .191 opponent average, 118 hits, 72 earned runs, 76 walks and 140 strikeouts. Schockemoehl is 3-0 with a 4.11ERA. The two teams have split their last eight meetings, with Mid-Prairie winning 2-1 in 2023.
