Both Lone Tree Lions teams came away with wins on the diamond Friday night against Wapello. Lone Tree softball broke up a scoreless tie with a run in the third inning and got one more over each of the next two frames, but it was their pitching and defense that would be the difference in defeating Wapello 3-0.
Senior pitcher Alex Dautremont was spectacular for the Lions, throwing a complete-game no-hitter and allowing just one walk against seven strikeouts, while fellow senior Vivian Zaruba and sophomore Addison McCullough had one hit and one run scored each for the lineup.
Sophomore Abby Zaruba added one run batted in on a base hit as Lone Tree wins their fourth straight game and their ninth of the last 12 contests to improve to 5-4 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 10-6 overall.
Lion baseball rolled to a 12-2 victory over Wapello, scoring six runs in the first inning alone and leading 10-0 before the Indians ever scored in a game that ended after five innings.
Sophomore Brock Nebergall had a game-high three hits and scored three runs as the lead-off hitter for Lone Tree, while senior Brody Magruder clubbed a home run. Sophomore Owen Eden joined Magruder in recording two total hits, three runs batted in and one run scored.
Seniors Jack Patterson and Maddox Jondle each scored twice and had one hit for the Lions, who raise their record to 6-8 with a third straight win and now have a 3-5 mark in the Super Conference North.
The Keota Eagles would also sweep a Friday-night double bill against Montezuma. Keota softball edged out the Braves 10-8, rallying from an early 4-2 deficit with five runs in the third inning and breaking up a tie game with three more runs in the sixth.
Freshman Elyse Lyle led the Eagles at the plate with a homer and a double as part of three total hits. Eighth-graders Jessalyn Aller and Addyson Ahlberg also each went deep and had two RBI to help Keota win their fourth of the last five games and improve to 7-5, including a 6-5 record in the South Iowa Cedar League.
Eagle baseball also won a close contest with Montezuma, as a run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in a 3-2 final. Senior Ashton Galindo cracked a double and had a team-high three hits for Keota, while sophomore Brennan McGuire came up with a pair of base hits, one RBI and one run scored.
Senior Billie Kindred pitched the first six frames and got the win by allowing just two hits and three walks. Sophomore Brycen Horras tossed a perfect seventh inning to help the Eagles move to 5-7 in conference play and 6-7 in total. Both Keota teams return to action this evening against Colfax-Mingo.
