The Sigourney Savages stayed perfect in conference play on the baseball diamond Friday with a 17-1 win over Belle Plaine. Sigourney responded to a 1-0 deficit after a half inning with four runs in the first, six in the second and seven more in the third to end the game early.

Senior Chase Clarahan led the Savages by hitting two home runs and finishing with three runs scored and three runs batted in. Sophomore Lincoln Power also powered out a homer and had three RBI and two runs scored on two hits, while seniors Cole McKay and Brady Clark each a had double and collected a pair of RBI while combining to score four runs.

Hunter Sellers not only picked up three runs driven in, but the freshman also pitched all four innings for Sigourney and allowed no earned runs on two hits while racking up six strikeouts.

The Savages were coming off a 13-2 victory the night before at BGM, racing out to the lead with six runs in the second inning and never looking back. Clarahan and McKay each had three hits for the lineup, with Clarahan scoring three times and driving in a pair and McKay adding one RBI to two runs scored.

Sophomore Landon Conrad added two hits and two runs batted in, while senior Isaac Bruns and sophomore Ike Molyneux each picked up two RBI and a run scored on a base hit.

The Savages, ranked second in the state in Class 1A, are now 16-1 overall and 12-0 in the South Iowa Cedar League ahead of facing another conference rival in Iowa Valley in their next game Monday.

The Keota Eagles were also winners Thursday night, knocking off HLV 7-1. Keota took the initial lead with two runs in the second inning and added three more in the third and two in the fifth.

Senior Ashton Galindo had a double as part of two hits and two runs scored for the Eagles, while junior Jackson Vittetoe led the team with three hits and two runs batted in.

Ayden Galindo also picked up two RBI on a double, while fellow sophomore Brennan McGuire got the win by pitching the first five-and-two-thirds innings and yielding just three hits and three walks against six strikeouts.

Keota had unfortunately suffered a close 2-1 loss on Wednesday night against North Mahaska. Leading most of the night, the Eagles surrendered two runs in the bottom of the sixth that proved to be the difference on the road.

Even in defeat, freshman Blake Baker was terrific on the mound for Keota, allowing no hits and three walks and rolling up eight strikeouts in five-and-a-third innings pitched. The Eagles are now 5-7, including a 4-7 record in conference play, and will next play Colfax-Mingo on Monday.
