The Washington Demons took part in the Iowa City West Classic on Friday and Saturday at the University of Iowa Softball Complex.

Washington got their weekend started by taking on Cedar Rapids Prairie, and while kept things close throughout against the number-six ranked team in Class 5A, two early runs would be enough for the Hawks, who would go on to win 3-1.

The Demons would again fall behind 2-0 in the first inning of their second game Friday, and five runs in the fifth would be the big blow that allowed Davenport West to cruise to a 10-2 victory.

Washington would bounce back Saturday against Durant, matching two runs from the number-two team in Class 2A and scoring twice in the sixth to come from behind for a 5-4 win.

Unfortunately, the weekend would end with the Demons falling behind early to Davenport Assumption, and a 10-run outburst in the sixth put away a 14-1 victory for the Knights, ranked third in Class 3A.

Junior Leighton Salazar led Washington offensively with seven hits for the weekend, as well as three runs scored, two runs batted in and two stolen bases. Ella Greiner cranked two doubles as part of five total hits for the tournament and had a pair of RBI, while fellow seniors Bella Salazar and Halle Cuddeback had three hits each.

Cuddeback scored twice in four games as the Demons’ record moves to 8-4. Washington, ranked 14th in Class 3A, returns to play later tonight for a conference doubleheader at Fairfield.
