The Lone Tree Lions edged out Central City softball 4-3 Saturday on the road. Lone Tree matched the Wildcats’ run in the second inning and briefly took the lead with a run in the third. Even when Central City scored twice in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead, the Lions would rally in the late stages with a pair of sixth-inning runs to claim victory.
Vivian Zaruba came through with two hits, including a double, and two runs batted in to lead the Lone Tree lineup, while fellow senior Haley Bockelman also had a pair of hits to go with one run scored and one RBI.
Senior Rylee Shield added a hit and a run scored in the lead-off spot, while sophomore pitcher Abby Zarbua got the complete-game victory in the circle by allowing just two earned runs on four hits and one walk while also striking out five batters. The win raises the Lions’ record to 4-4 ahead of facing Hillcrest Academy tomorrow.
The WACO Warriors would not have the same luck in three games to wrap up last week. WACO fell Friday night to Louisa-Muscatine 26-0, followed by a 19-1 loss to Mount Pleasant and a 15-2 defeat at the hands of Holy Trinity Catholic the following day in Fort Madison.
The Warriors are winless through their first seven games of the season as they prepare to next play tomorrow evening against Pekin.
