The Columbus Wildcat softball team scored a big conference win on Friday night by defeating the Highland Huskies 7-5 in Riverside. Highland took the initial lead with two runs in the first inning, but after trailing 5-2 going into the late innings, Columbus roared to life, scoring twice in the sixth and three times in the seventh.
The Wildcats would split a pair of games the next day at Louisa-Muscatine. After a 15-3 loss in five innings to West Burlington Notre Dame, Columbus edged out Mount Pleasant 3-2. The Wildcats now have a record of 4-2, including a 3-0 mark in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
Meanwhile, despite three hits and two runs batted in from eighth-grader Adley Sweeting on Friday, a loss ended Highland’s 2-0 start to the season. The Huskies play again tonight against West Burlington Notre Dame, while the Wildcats return to action tomorrow at Central Lee.
