Eighty minutes Friday is all that separates the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls soccer team from their first ever trip to the state tournament. The Hawks get that opportunity when they travel to the Quad Cities tonight to meet perennial power Davenport Assumption in the Class 1A Regional Finals. Mid-Prairie is 7-10-3 after a 2-1 semifinal win over Mediapolis Wednesday at Archer Field, where Meadow Flynn and Avery Helmuth scored goals, Kyla Karnes had an assist and Ruth Whitthoft locked down goal with six saves. This season, the Golden Hawks have been outscored 37-35 in total with 161 shots on goal, 73 corner kicks, 19 assists and an 82% team save percentage. Individually, Flynn’s 11 goals are best, Lydia Beachy leads with four assists and in goal, Niva Helmuth has 135 saves.
Davenport Assumption enters with an 11-4-1 record this year, 5-2-1, third place in the Mississippi Athletic Conference. They were 10-0 winners over Washington in the semifinals. The Knights are ranked No. 3 in Class 1A in the final poll of the year from the Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association. This year, they have outscored their opponents 78-6 with 141 shots on goal, 76 corner kicks 44 assists and a 92% team save percentage. Individually, Dru Dorsey leads with 28 goals and 11 assists. Alyssa O’Neal has 77 saves in goal.
The Knights have been involved in each 1A State tournament dating back to at least 2011. The winner of this match advances to the 2025 Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union State Tournament in Ames next week. Action starts tonight at 7p.m. at Davenport Assumption High School.
