It took two days, but for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk girls soccer team, the results were worth the wait. In a match that started on Monday, and concluded on Tuesday, the Golden Hawks advanced through the opening round of the Class 1A regional tournament with an 8-0 win over Wapello in Wellman. The first 22 minutes were played in miserable conditions Monday night, before lightning stopped the proceedings at a 0-0 tie. Tuesday night, the Golden Hawks systematically dismantled the Arrows, scoring eight times across the final 60 minutes of the match to run away with the win.

Mid-Prairie won shots on goal 20-2, and corner kicks 10-0. Meadow Flynn and Zoey Curtiss each scored twice. Gabby Geno, Kassidi Greiner, Maya Banuelos, and Brooklyn Schneider each scored once. Sam Wunderlich and Ruth Witthoft had two assists each, Banuelos, Ahna Townsend and Curtiss each had one. Following the match, Flynn, Curtiss, Wunderlich and Witthoft talked with KCII Sports about the win.

Flynn said, “We looked and felt like a whole different team compared to last night. I’m glad we got a re-do!”

Wunderlich added, “Our play-style and team work was much better today. We were playing mostly solo games Monday. We feel more prepared for tomorrow. We may be tired but our spirits are high.”

Witthoft said, “I think we came out really focused today and wanted to win.”

Curtiss continued, “It feels really good and accomplished to get the win. It helps with team spirit.”

Mid-Prairie is now 5-10-3 on the year and Wapello ends their season at 0-13. The Golden Hawks are back in action in the second round of the playoffs tonight at 5:30p.m. In Mount Pleasant against the Panthers.
