The Washington Demon track and field teams competed yesterday at the Brookhart-Crew Relays in Fairfield. The Washington girls finished second as a team with 148 points, 31 behind the winners from Mount Pleasant, while the Demon boys were third in team scoring.

Junior Leighton Messinger helped lead the Washington girls to runner-up status by clearing four feet 10 inches to win the high jump competition. Freshman Jaslyn Villa would be the champion in the 400-meter dash for the Demons with a time of just under one minute four seconds, while sophomore Emma Horak won the 800 meters in just over two-and-a-half minutes.

Washington would get the victory in the 4-by-400-meter relay by posting a time of 4:20, and the Demons would run the 4-by-100-meters in 49.57 seconds to tie Mount Pleasant for first.

Jaedyn Moore would earn second place in the 100 meters for Washington, as would fellow sophomores Layla Green in the 200 and Ellie Van Der Molen in the 3,000. Senior Lauren Horak added another silver medal in the 400, as did junior Taylor Miksch in the discus throw and the Demons’ 4-by-200 and sprint medley relays.

In addition to Washington finishing third in the 4-by-800, Green took bronze in the high jump, as did Villa in the 100, junior Leighton Salazar in the long jump and freshman Lauren Drahota in the 200.

The Demon boys got another victory for Greyson Hartman in the shot put throw, this time with a toss of 59 feet five-and-a-half inches. The sophomore was also the discus champion with a throw of over 160 feet.

The Washington 4-by-200 relay would have the winning time of a tick under 1:33, while the the 4-by-800 relay won in 8:42 and the distance medley finished third.

Senior Tyler Alderton claimed second in the 800 for the Demons, as did senior Jayfred Espinosa in the long jump and junior Carson Ryan in the 110-meter hurdles. Ryan was also third in the 400 hurdles, as was junior Sawyer Tschantz in the open 800 and sophomore Ethan Hotchkiss in the mile.
