
Another dominant showing by the Columbus Wildcats headlined the Southeast Iowa Super Conference action Thursday in track and field. The Columbus boys won the Central City Co-Ed Meet with a team score of 208 points, finishing 100 points ahead of the hosting Wildcats in Central City.
Columbus rolled up a whopping 10 event victories, including Lamar Ceant winning twice. The sophomore was the champion of the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.51 seconds, edging out junior teammate Alexander Rees by one-tenth of a second.
Cenat would again just slip past Rees to win the 110-meter hurdles by two-tenths of a second at 14.78, while sophomore Cade Storm claimed the crown in the open 800 meters in two minutes 13 seconds.
Senior Ty Muniz was a champion in the 1,600 meters in 4:46, followed by freshman teammate Victor Tovar in second and Wildcats sophomore Drake Marin in third. Muniz would also win the 3,200 in a tick under 10:25, with sophomore Ryan Villa and freshman Alan Miranda adding silver and bronze in that same race, respectively, for the ‘Cats.
Senior Riley Kaalberg won for Columbus in the long jump by hitting 18-and-a-half feet, while Ronaldo Villegas had the top toss of nearly 40 feet in the shot put and fellow sophomore Fritz Figaro was the discus champ with a throw of 122 feet seven inches.
The Wildcats would also win the 4-by-100-meter relay by clocking in at 44.03 seconds and took the title in the shuttle hurdles in just under 1:04. The distance medley would take second, as would the 4-by-400 and 4-by-800-meters.
Kaalberg also won a silver medal for Columbus in the 100, as did junior Angel Venzor in the 400 hurdles and freshman Lando Garza in the open 400, while bronze medals came from senior Itai Zapiensz in the discus and freshman Dante Orozco in the 400 hurdles.
The Lone Tree Lions nearly brought home the girls’ team title at Central City, scoring 160 points to finish 11 behind East Buchanan. Three different Lone Tree athletes had multiple victories, including Hayden Yoder, who won both throwing events by hitting 32 feet eight inches in the shot put and nearly 98 feet in the discus.
Fellow senior Rylee Shield was the champion in the 200 in 27.26 seconds and won the 400 in 1:02. Junior Ava Christofferson added victories in the 100 in 13.26 seconds and the long jump at 16-and-a-half feet, while the Lions’ 4-by-100 relay had the top time of 52.67 seconds, as did their sprint medley team at just under 1:57.
Senior Vivian Zaruba would finish second in both the 100 and 800 for Lone Tree, as would sophomore Abby Zaruba in the 1,500 and seniors Sami Branson and Alex Dautremont in the shot and discus, respectively. Dautremont was also third in the shot put, while the Lions won silver in the 4-by-400 and bronze in the 4-by-200.
The Columbus girls were led by a victory from freshman Gabriela Duran, who won the 1,500 meters in 6:11. The Wildcats also claimed a relay championship in the 4-by-200 with a time that was tenths of a second away from two minutes flat.
Senior Ariana Vergara was second in the 3,000 for Columbus, while Duran finished third in the 800, as did sophomore Kymila Bacon in the 100 and the Wildcats’ 4-by-100 relay.
Winfield-Mount Union hosted the annual WMU Girls’ Relays on Thursday and was led by victories for senior Josie Nelson and freshman Kynlee Buffington. Nelson was the champion in the 100 hurdles by clocking in at 16.53 seconds, while Buffington leaped 16 feet three inches to win another long jump.
Buffington was also second in the 200, while Nelson was third in the 400 hurdles. Junior Jayda Nichols added a bronze medal for the Wolves in the open 100.
WACO’s best finish at Winfield-Mount Union came from their shuttle hurdles relay, which took the title with a time of nearly 1:15 and beat the Wolves by about two-and-half seconds.
Freshman Bren Graber finished second in the both the high jump and the 400 hurdles, as did the Warriors’ distance medley relay. Senior Ally Rinner came in third in the 100 hurdles for WACO, while the sprint medley, 4-by-100 and 4-by-200 also earned second place each.
Highland took part in the Lisbon Invitational and was led by sophomore Chloe Sexton’s silver medal in the shot put, while freshman Grace Bombei was third in the 800. The Huskies were also second in the girls’ sprint medley, while the boys’ best finish was fourth in the 4-by-200.
