The WACO Warriors capped off the boys’ basketball regular season by taking down a Southeast Iowa Super Conference rival last night, winning 64-49 at Wapello. WACO took control of a tie game with a 17-9 run to close out the first half leading 31-23, and they would stretch the lead out to 14 points by the final quarter.
The victory means the Warriors improve to 17-5 overall and finish 14-2 in the Super Conference North, earning them a split of the conference championship with Hillcrest Academy.
The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves would not have the same luck yesterday, taking a 49-45 loss at Pekin. An 18-15 lead after one quarter became a one-point deficit by halftime, and WMU would not be able to come back after entering the final period down six.
Senior Cooper Buffington led Winfield-Mount Union with 17 points and seven rebounds, while junior Max Edwards added 10 points as the Wolves fall to 13-9, including finishing conference play with an 11-5 mark.
While WMU now prepares to start the playoffs Monday with a rematch against Pekin, WACO will host Danville in the first round in Class 1A Substate 4. You can hear the Warriors in action with special KCII Area Game of the Week coverage starting Monday night at 6:30 on 106.1 FM and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app.
