
The final regular season event of the year is here for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys wrestling team, when they host four other KCII area schools for their home Colton Allen Memorial Dual Tournament Saturday at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman. The Hawks have a 5-18 dual record on the year. They were last in action a week ago at the River Valley Conference Championship meet where senior Burke Berry brought home the conference title at 285lbs. Quinn Callahan finished fourth.
This year, the Golden Hawks are led by Berry’s 31-7 record. Tommy Miller at 215lbs is next on the team with 28 wins and Max Howe has 20. Mason Howe, Josh Turner, Quinn Callahan and Brock Fisher are all over .500.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union Wildcats have a 15-11 dual record this year. They were team runners-up at last week’s Southeast Iowa Superconference Championships, led by Superconference titles for Markel Zapiensz at 215lbs and Itai Zapiensz at 285. Dakota Aney at 106lbs leads the Wildcats with a 39-9 record. He’s ranked No. 12 in Class 2A in the latest Iawrestle.com poll. Riley Kaalberg at 165lbs is next with 35 wins and Jacob Nelson at 113 and Karson Dopler at 175 each have 31.
The Highland Huskies have a 7-14 dual record this season. They were third at last week’s Superconference Championships, led by runner-up finishes for Cash Cole at 113lbs, Brock Thomann at 126, and Isaac Kleese at 215. Cole has a team best 30-17 record. Thomann, Mason Lavely, and Tyler Pierson all have won at least 20.
The WACO Warriors will be in Wellman today. The Warriors are 9-9 on the dual year and coming off of a sixth place finish at the Superconference meet last week, led by Louden Huisenga’s championship at 190lbs and runner-up performances for Ian Maize at 106 and Gage Samo at 120. That trio leads the Warriors in the win column this year with Huisenga unbeaten at 35-0. The three have a combined 99-5 record. In the latest 1A poll from Iawrestle.com Huisenga is No. 1, Maize No. 2 and Samo No. 6 in their respective weight classes, with the Warriors at No. 10 in the 1A team dual rankings.
Sigourney-Keota has a 12-7 dual record. They placed third at last week’s South Iowa Cedar League Championship meet, with Owen Menke winning the title at 285lbs and Jacob Libe second at 157. Owen Menke is SK’s win’s leader this year with a 33-8 record. Dillon Menke at 144, Brady Clark at 157, Jacob Libe at 165, Ashton Schwab at 190 and Jayden Thompson at 215 all have 20 or more this year.
Action starts at 9a.m. Saturday and continues all day at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman.
