The Highland Huskies edged out Louisa-Musactine 38-36 in a girls’ basketball battle Saturday. Highland cut a four-point deficit after one quarter down to one by halftime, and the Huskies would go in front 29-25 heading into the final period, where they would hold on for a win in a tight finish.

Freshman Kamryn Fink had 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead Highland, while junior Emersyn Schultz finished with 12 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Hailey Brun added seven points, six boards and three steals to help the Huskies improve to 5-3 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 7-3 overall.

The victory was a bounce-back for Highland after falling to Pekin the night before. The Huskies trailed 35-29 going into the final period but would rally to tie the game and force overtime.

Unfortunately, the Panthers closed the game on a 7-2 run in the extra session and got the 54-49 win. Fink led the team with 22 points and six made three-point baskets while also pulling down a game-high 18 rebounds.

The Highland boys’ basketball team would drop both of their first games of January. The Huskies fell behind 24-2 to Pekin and could never recover in a 74-30 loss Friday. Junior Bryce Hazelett scored a team-high 13 points.

Highland was again down big early the next night, facing a 22-7 deficit after a quarter of play at Louisa-Muscatine before ultimately falling 68-49. Senior Logan McFarland led the scoring with 17 points, while Hazelett added 11.

A pair of losses drop the Huskies to 1-6, both overall and in the Super Conference North. Both Highland teams next play tomorrow at Lone Tree.
