Week Four of the high school football season is here, and the Washington Demons face a tough challenge on the road tonight when they travel to take on Grinnell in a game you can hear on KCII.

Washington is off to a 3-0 start to the season for the first time in four years, but it hasn’t been easy. The Demons have won all three of their games by eight points or less, with last week’s 34-26 victory over Fairfield requiring a game-sealing interception from junior Kael Williams as the Trojans drove down the field to try and tie the game.

Williams also made a splash in his first career start at quarterback, running for 234 yards and four touchdowns to now give him the second-most rushing yards in the Southeast Conference.

Senior receivers Mason Morgan and Jayfred Espinosa have been playmakers for Washington as well, with Morgan collecting nine receptions for 193 yards and Espinosa racking up 10 catches for over 120 yards and two TDs.

But, for the most part, the Demons have leaned on a defense that is allowing just over 15 points and 245 yards per game. Senior linebacker Jude Carter leads the team with 28 total tackles, but impact players have also emerged on the defensive line.

Senior Keider Gomez-Valdez has put up a team-high five-and-a-half tackles for loss, while sophomore Brady Krantz has posted a team-best three sacks. Head coach Kelly Williams tells KCII Sports that Washington will need to get after it again on both sides of the ball when they face Grinnell.

“It’s going to be a completely different defense for Grinnell,” Williams says. “Grinnell is a very physical team. They’re going to stretch us from sideline to sideline.”

The Demons have arguably their hardest test of the early season this evening against Grinnell, a team that is 3-0 and has also been dominant on defense, surrending under 190 yards a game and a total of only 14 points.

Sophomore Josh Ringler has been one of the ringleaders of the Tiger defense with 5.5 tackles for loss and three sacks. Meanwhile, senior Brady Coffman pilots the offense at QB and has thrown for eight touchdowns.

Washington hasn’t beaten Grinnell in five meetings since 2010. The Demons try to tame the Tigers and continue their unbeaten start, and you can hear all the action tonight on 106.1 FM KCII, as well as streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII1 app. Coverage begins with the HOMEgirl Realty Pregame Show at 7 p.m.
