
A trio of area girls track and field teams have their sights set on Central College in Pella today for their next indoor competition.
The Hillcrest Academy Ravens opened the year in Ames last week at the Iowa Association of Track Coaches Indoor State Championships where they placed 17th in 1A with 20 points. Hillcrest was led by Rya Scott’s third place finish in long jump, fifth place in the 60m dash and 400 and seventh in the 200. Marie Yoder was fifth in the 3000 and 11th in the 1500. Delaney Shaw was 15th in long jump.
The Highland Huskies start the season today. The Huskies scored 11 points as a team at state last year. Highlights from state for athletes who return this season include Sarah Burton who was state long jump champion and scored in the 100 meters. Burton was also a member of the 4×100 and 4×200 teams with returner Lilly Barre.
This is the first meet of the year for the WACO girls. The Warriors ended the season at their home 1A State Qualifier last year, where they scored 28 points led by Zoey Dennler in second place in the 400 hurdles and third for the distance medley of Hannah Dennis, Halle Shelman, McKenzie Vradenburg and Elyssa Graber.
These three will be joined will be joined today by ADM, Ankeny Centennial, Boone, CAM, Carlisle, Chariton, Danville, Des Moines North, East Marshall, Fairfield, Indianola, Keokuk, Knoxville, Melcher-Dallas, Mount Pleasant, Murray, Newton, Panorama, Pella, Southeast Polk, Van Buren, Waukee, Waukee Northwest and Wayne.
Action continues all day Saturday at Kuyper Fieldhouse on the campus of Central College in Pella.
