With the playoffs on the horizon, the WACO Warriors wrapped up the boys’ basketball regular season by defeating the Sigourney Savages 64-51 Friday night. WACO built an early lead and stayed in front the rest of the way.

With the victory, WACO has now seven of their last eight games. Behind a terrific trio of seniors, the Warriors have gone 17-5 this season. Hunter Hughes is the team’s leading scorer and averages over 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals per game, while Colton Leichty is the team’s top post threat by posting over 13 points and eight rebounds per contest.

Chase Waterhouse has also been a force of late for WACO, finishing his final season strong and averaging over 10 points and six boards a game in total. The Warriors will be looking to start the postseason on the right note when they host Pekin in the first round of the Class 1A Substate 5 tournament Monday, a team they beat 70-42 just this last week.

Meanwhile, while the loss for Sigourney was their third in the last four games, the Savages still end the regular season with a record of 13-8. Junior Issac Bruns has been one of the leaders of a young team, putting up almost 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists per game, but he’s had plenty of help.

Sophomore Solon Yates has been a scoring threat by putting up over 13 points a game and shooting over 32 percent from the three-point line. Freshman Ike Molyneux has proven to be a versatile player in his first season by averaging almost nine points, five-and-a-half rebounds, four-and-a-half assists and three steals per contest.

Sophomores John Berg and Brayden Wood have helped out Sigourney in the low post, combining to average almost 15.5 points and 11.5 rebounds. The Savages will begin the playoffs with a tough task in Class 1A Substate 5, as they’ll travel Monday to meet a Danville team that is 14-7.
