The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves and Highland Huskies competed in round-robin action Saturday at the Wilton Volleyball Tournament. In their matchup against each other, WMU defeated Highland in straight sets 21-12 and 21-19.

The Wolves went 2-3 overall on the day and finished third. Winfield-Mount Union fell in straight sets to the host Wilton Beavers, 21-17 and 21-3, before also being swept by Burlington, 21-14 and 21-11. WMU took the first set from Mount Pleasant 23-21 before dropping the next two 21-13 and 20-18, but the Wolves did get one other victory, as they bounced back from losing the first 21-12 to defeat Mediapolis 21-15 and 15-12.

Senior outside hitter Audrie Gipple led Winfield-Mount Union with 31 kills and added 23 digs for the tournament. Senior middle blocker Lily Freeman swatted away seven shots and finished with 12 kills. In addition to handing out a team-high 40 assists, senior setter Aurey Meeker had four kills, a serving ace and 20 digs, while Pacey Schlee added five aces and 28 digs on the back line for WMU, which now has a record of 8-8 and next plays tomorrow against Hillcrest Academy.

Highland went winless on the day, falling 21-19 and 21-16 to Burlington before losing 21-11 and 21-15 to Mepo and being defeated 21-8 and 23-21 by Wilton. The Huskies are now 4-8 and will hope for better fortunes tomorrow night when they host Columbus.

The Wildcats spent the weekend at the Williamsburg Tournament. Columbus fell in straight sets to Central Lee, losing each frame 21-17, before they were beaten by Beckman Catholic 21-9 and 21-6. The ‘Cats completed the day by falling to Fairfield 21-14 and 21-15 to drop to their record to 2-9.
