Last week’s extreme heat did little to alleviate the drought conditions in southeast Iowa, as a majority of the KCII listening area continues to see severe and even extreme drought conditions.
Extreme drought has persisted in the northwest corner of Jefferson County and a southern portion of Keokuk County. Northern Iowa and Johnson Counties recorded their first areas of extreme drought this year, as it spread from Benton and Linn Counties.
Nearly 90 percent of drought conditions in the KCII listening area has been classified as severe, led by Johnson and Jefferson Counties at 100 percent. They are followed by Washington County at 99.78 percent, Louisa County at 96.31 percent, and Henry County at 87.86 percent.
As the harvest season approaches, there is not much reprieve from these conditions on the horizon. Ninety degree temperatures and few opportunities for precipitation are forecast for this weekend into next week. To view drought conditions in your county, as well as the rest of the state, click here.
