This season for the Columbus Wildcat football has been the stuff of dreams. A program that couldn’t put up a winning season in the last decade and a half is ranked 10th in Class A and improved to 8-1 by getting their first playoff win since 1997 last week. Now comes a chance to make some more magic as Columbus Community travels to take on second-ranked Grundy Center in the second round of the A postseason, a game you can hear streaming on KCII2 and KCIIradio.com.

Columbus has leaned on a terrific run game and a sturdy defense to crunch on opponents like Halloween candy. Junior running back Kaden Amigon has rushed for at least 200 yards in six games this year and has piled up over 1,700 yards and 26 touchdowns. Senior Triston Miller has been a fantastic second option, running for 885 yards and 13 TDs. And that’s before you get to that stingy Columbus defense. Sophomore Riley Kaalberg has been an instant-impact transfer with a team-high 68 tackles, while junior lineman Russell Coil has hammered the opposing backfield with 12 tackles for loss and four sacks to help his unit give up less than 16 points per game.

The Wildcats will need to contend with Grundy Center junior quarterback Collin Gordon, who is coming off a four-touchdown-pass game last week and has thrown for over 1,400 yards and 16 TDs. The 9-0 Spartans have also been a dominant defensive team, allowing just over 100 rushing yards a game and giving up only 43 total points all season. Columbus will look to defeat Grundy Center and keep a historic season rolling starting this evening at 7. Our coverage begins with the Washington HyVee Pregame show at 6:30.
