The Broadway Musical Mary Poppins will be coming to the Washington Community Center with opening night set for this Friday at 7:30pm.
Every play or musical needs its lead and performing the role of the famous British nanny will be Zoe Wagner who is a seasoned veteran of the stage who last performed in Young Frankenstein. Wagner noted that making the transition from playing a lead in a dark comedy to a lead in a uplifting family friendly musical like Mary Poppins is not an easy task.
“It’s a big one I would say, so keeping things PG has been a little bit harder than what we have done before. But it’s been magical and I love working with kids, so it’s been really fun to see everyone’s faces light up and see everyone one so excited.”
Another veteran of the stage Vern Miller has been cast in the secondary lead as Bert. Wagner, having already worked with Miller before, is more than happy to share the stage with him again. “Vern is very funny, you never know what he’s gonna say or do so it’s always so it’s always a fun surprise to see what he’s gonna do next. I really enjoy working with him because he’s just so easy to play off and we’re always hyping each other up backstage so it’s always really fun to do a show with him.”
For those familiar with Mary Poppins they know that she is no ordinary Nanny possessing many unique abilities and trinkets such as her bottomless handbag. But maybe her most magical trait is the ability to fly, something that Wagner and the rest of the Theater had to master before opening night.
“I thought I was going to be really scared of it because I am a little bit afraid of heights but it has become one of my favorite parts of the show and it just has added so much more magic to the show.”
The show dates and times are June 17th,18th, 24th and 25th at 7:30pm with the afternoon matinees being June 19th and 26th at 2:30pm.
