The City of Washington has recently been awarded $600,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for their water main improvement project.
The city council approved a contract with the Iowa Economic Development Authority for the grant at their recent meeting. These funds will be used for work on West Madison Street from C to H avenues, West Washington Street from D to F avenues, and East Main Street from 12th to 15th avenues. These are high breakage areas that have been an ongoing issue for years. The city is committing $1.385 million in general obligation bonds for the project and additional water main improvements in the city. Based on a survey conducted this summer, 72.18% of the residents living in the target neighborhood who will be impacted by this project are of low to moderate income. The council also approved an administration agreement with Simmering-Cory & Iowa Codification for this grant.
