A road doubleheader started up the second half of the Southeast Conference slate for the Washington softball team last night when they invaded Fort Madison and escaped town with a split.

Game one felt like the Demons were in control throughout until a 4-2 advantage was wiped away by six unanswered from the Bloodhounds (6-11, 3-7) and they closed it out in an 8-4 final. Washington recorded four hits led by Ava Turner going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. Bella Salazar was cruising along in the circle until the fifth and finished the complete game giving up eight runs on eight hits.

Washington struggled offensively in the nightcap until a 1-0 deficit turned into a 1-1 tie in the fifth when Kellie Dallmeyer launched a towering shot to left field for her fifth home run of the season. That dinger opened things up for the Demon offense and they plated four in the seventh headlined by a two RBI single from Cameron Malichky. Halle Cuddeback closed it out in the circle for the 5-2 win. The eighth grader tossed a complete game giving up two runs on nine hits. Dallmeyer finished 2-for-4 with one RBI. The senior talked about her solo shot. “It felt good off the bat. I was in a slump in game one so I wasn’t trying to do too much. I just wanted to get on base and get something started for the team and then it went over.”

Washington is now 14-13 overall and tied for second in the league with an 8-4 mark. Burlington stands atop with a 10-2 record. The Demons turnaround for an area battle tonight at home against Mid-Prairie (4-22). The single game can be heard on FM 106.1 KCII with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Washington baseball team had a hard time keeping up in their doubleheader loss to the Bloodhounds with final scores of 8-4 and 10-3. The orange and black falls to 9-7 overall and 6-6 in the SEC.
