The Winfield-Mt. Union volleyball team saw their season come to an end Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the class 1A playoffs at the hands of the Burlington Notre Dame Nikes. The Nikes got the win in straight sets by scores of 25-22, 25-17 and 25-17. After the match, Winfield-Mt. Union head coach Dave Pieart talked about his team. “We knew they had three big hitters with a great setter. Offensively they are very talented. They are playing their best ball of the season. At the end of the first set we managed to get on a run. Unfortunately, it was because one of their players went out trying to recover from a slight injury. That threw them off. It was a combination of us playing better and them being out of sorts. Tonight, we just couldn’t put streaks together. We couldn’t get on service runs, we couldn’t seem to get two or three points in a row. That ultimately killed us. They nickeled and dimed us all night. This group of seniors are the first conference champions since 1996. They won the schools first tournament in how long. They hold two or three career records. They made a huge impact on the program.”

The Wolves were led in the match by Jenna Buffington with nine kills. Kayla Edwards led the team with 13 assists and was a perfect 15 of 15 from the service line with a pair of aces. Jami Wilkerson and Keetyn Townsley each had 12 digs. Winfield-Mt. Union wraps up their season at 21-7 overall and will say goodbye to seven seniors, Wilkerson, Kyndal Townsley, Emma Haines, Buffington, Edwards, Molly Miller and Madie Anderson.
