Mt. Pleasant, Winfield, and area firefighters were busy Friday with two separate house fires. According to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:20 a.m., a house fire was reported at 306 East Ash Street in Winfield and the Winfield Fire Department responded. The fire was able to be extinguished, but the house was deemed a total loss. The house was vacant when the fire occurred. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s Office. In that fire, the Winfield and Mt. Union Fire Departments assisted at the scene. 

 

Later that afternoon, at 1:30 p.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of another structure fire, this time at the 2600 block of Iowa Avenue in Mt. Pleasant. Reports state smoke was billowing from the home. Fire crews from Mt. Pleasant and Salem battled the flames for three hours before it was contained. The home was seriously damaged and no one was home when the fire occurred. That home is owned by State Senator Rich Taylor. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
