highway-1-construction

Construction crews are nearly halfway complete with bridge construction work on Highway 1 north of Kalona. Beginning August 10, crews were given 45 calendar days to complete the work. Transportation Engineer Manager Lauren Giarmo says crews are implementing an accelerated bridge construction technique to finish the project more quickly than traditional projects. Crews construct the bridge beside the old one, and slide the new one into place once it’s ready. This project will see two bridges that go over Old Man’s Creek and Old Woman’s Creek replaced with a rolled-steel bridge and a concrete beam bridge, respectively. Also, two box culverts will be constructed at the Old Man’s Creek overflow. The final day of construction is set for September 23. The road remains closed at this time, and those traveling between Kalona and Iowa City will have to follow a 19-mile detour following Highways 22 and 218.
