Senior night was a friendly one at Dick Sojka Memorial Field in Washington on Thursday, as the Demon baseball team swept away Fairfield in a Southeast Conference doubleheader.

As heard on KCII, in game one the Demons trailed 2-0 early, but rallied off nine straight runs en route to a 9-3 victory. The turning point in the contest came in the third inning when a bases clearing double by Reece Mayer turned a two run deficit into a 3-2 lead. Mayer pushed his batting average to .500 on the season after a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI. Lucas Kroll recorded a pair of hits and knocked in three tallies. Luke Turner picked up the win on the bump going 5 1/3 innings giving up three runs on seven hits and striking out nine.

Game two saw Washington jump out to a 5-0 lead after three on the strength of three consecutive RBI knocks from Brady Knutson, Mayer, and Wilx Witthoft. The Trojans would not go down quietly and chipped away at the deficit and trailed just 6-5 heading into the sixth. After Knutson brought in an insurance tally on a sac fly, the senior nabbed the save on the mound by recording the final out with the tying run in scoring position. Ethan Patterson was the winning pitcher in the 7-5 final throwing five frames giving up three earned runs on four hits and fanning seven batters. Knutson was 2-for-2 with three RBI and Witthoft brought in two.

The senior Turner told KCII Sports what is what like to get two wins on senior night. “It felt great. All of our seniors and everyone in general made an impact for us to get the sweep. I thought my slider was pretty effective tonight. They were still making contact, but it was weak and my teammates were making plays defensively to get outs.”

Washington improves to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in the SEC. They get back on the road Monday at Mount Pleasant.
