The fifth best sports story in our top 10 countdown for area schools from the 2019-2020 academic year takes us to a Highland boys’ basketball season that won’t soon be forgotten.

The Huskies posted a 20-win season to match the school record set in the 1980s. Highland finished the campaign 20-5 including a district title appearance and placed second in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North division standings with a 14-2 league mark. Five players were named to the SEISC All Conference teams led by first team selections in Zack Lasek and Mason McFarland. The 6’8’’ Lasek was a load inside tallying 16.7 points per game and a league best 10.3 rebounds. McFarland was top five in the division with 14.4 points a night including shooting 34% from long range. Cole Adamson, Bill Laughlin, and Derick Sandburg rounded out the all conference selections for the team. The Huskies opened the class 1A playoffs with a 47-36 victory over Hillcrest Academy, held on for a 72-68 win over North Cedar in the second round, before falling to Springville 59-35 in the district championship.

Check back in tomorrow for number four on our countdown when we take a look at a Sigourney bowler that made history.
