More than 10 Democrats are seeking the presidential nomination and on Monday Iowans will be the first in the nation to vote on who should be the nominee. The Iowa caucuses begin at 7 p.m. Monday and voters must be in line at their precinct location by that time to take part. Voters will be able to register to vote at the door.

Once inside, caucus-goers will then stand in the area set aside for the candidate they support. Undecided voters can also go and be in a space allocated for undecided voters. Washington County Democratic Party Chair Kimberly Davis explains each candidate must have enough voters to be considered viable, or 15% in most precincts. If a candidate is not viable, those voters have a chance to go to their second-choice, “So there’s a second alignment, and they have an opportunity to go to whatever group that they want to, and that’s the biggest difference. I think one thing that’s the biggest difference this time around from previous caucuses is that once you’re in a viable group that’s it, no realignment, no opportunity for realignment. Once you’re in a viable group you’re done.”

Davis adds that all of the math for viability will be done in front of everyone to see. Also, children are able to tag along with their parents at caucus sites. Listen to KCII Radio Monday night for results from Democratic and Republican caucuses.
