A perennial tree will return to downtown Washington and will soon be decorated with donated mittens. The Washington Public Library’s mitten tree will return in about three weeks, which gives those making homemade items time to finish up projects. The Sticks and Strings group started the project about 12 years ago. Library Director Bryna Walker says the tree is for more than mittens, “We will be accepting new mittens, gloves, hats, scarves, and socks which will be hung on the tree or placed underneath. Items can be handmade or purchased for sizes babies through adults. All items will be distributed to those in need by late December.” Each year they receive about 200 items and they’re all distributed to those in need. The items are split among HACAP, CHOICES, the police department, the shelter, and the schools. Donations can be dropped off November 18th through mid-December.
