The highest snowfalls on Halloween in eastern Iowa were all under an inch of snow before this year. According to the National Weather Service, the highest amount recorded in Iowa City was a trace of snow on Halloween of 1959. The record for Burlington was set in 1954 with nine-tenths of an inch. A high temperature of 36 degrees is expected for Halloween in Washington, with temperatures forecasted to warm up to the high-40’s this weekend.
With winter weather arriving, it may be a good time to put together your winter car kit and Washington County Emergency Management Coordinator Marissa Reisen advises what should be in it, “You want to make sure you have communications, so everybody’s always got their cell phone with them. But is it always charged? Do you have a car charger? Have some extra layers of clothing, warm blankets, some non-perishable food to keep in your car. Water is always good to have, but make sure that if you get a brand new bottle of water open it up and dump a little out because if it freezes, the bottle of water expands when it freezes and you could have a mess. You want some tools, you know, your ice scraper, a little shovel if you need it, kitty litter if you get stuck.” The litter can be put under your tires in slick conditions to help get traction.
