The Washington wrestling team traveled to Lone Tree last night for duels against Pekin, WACO and the hosting Lions, winning all three.
They started off with WACO, beating the Warriors by a team score of 58-12. Despite the deficit, there were several competitive matches in that one, with WACO’s Jonah Clark, Jalen Collins and Jaden Williams all holding their own against powers like the Ikerd twins and Brandon Dickel. A couple of milestones were met in this duel, with Garrett Ikerd earning his 100th career win and Tristin Westphal breaking the school record for most career wins, earning number 156 by forfeit.
Then came the most competitive duel of the night, which Washington won over Pekin 48-30. The Demons saw an impressive performance from Dillan Sanders, who pinned his opponent in 26 seconds. There was some injury concern after this duel, however, as Brandon Dickel and Garrett Ikerd each took losses in that one, with Dickel being slow to get up after a pin and Ikerd having to leave his match due to injury.
The Lone Tree duel rounded out the night, with the Demons taking a big win 54-9. A lot of those points came from forfeits by Lone Tree due to their abundance of open spots, but the three matches that did happen were all competitive. The highlight of this duel was the 106 weight class, which saw Matt Collett move down a class to take on Lone Tree’s Bryce Thompson. Thompson has been dominant this year, losing only four matches up to this point, but Collett nearly made the comeback on him thanks to a take down and a couple stalling points penalizing Thompson, taking the narrow 5-4 loss.
With the wins, the Demons improve to 17-6 in duels on the year. Their next action, weather permitting, comes on Saturday at the East Marshall tournament.
