There were fewer traffic fatalities in Iowa in 2018 than the year before. The Iowa Department of Transportation released the final 2018 figures, and there were 319 people who died as a result of a crash on Iowa’s roads. Iowa had been on track to have the lowest number in 70 years, with 315 deaths as of December 30th. However, that was not the case, and in 2013 there were two fewer with 317 traffic fatalities. The county with the highest number of traffic fatalities in 2018 was Polk County with 27. Sixteen counties across the state recorded zero traffic deaths.

Washington County had one fatal wreck during the year: on January 6th, 2018, Jason Andrew Caylor of Iowa City died in a single-vehicle rollover wreck. He was traveling eastbound on Highway 22 and the car left the roadway and rolled multiple times. Caylor died at the scene.
