Early retirement may be an option for some staff in the Washington Community School District. At Wednesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Willie Stone said they are considering offering early retirement to administrative assistant staff in the district, “One of our worries, our secretarial staff is, is getting to a place where they could all go at once and that’s, I really worry about that because that’s a lot of years of service, and a lot of knowledge. And if you’ve been in our offices at all, not that our principals don’t run the building, but if the principals are gone the building can still run pretty good, you have the secretaries be gone and it’s tough.” The offer would be for staff members who are 55-years or older and who have been with the district for at least 20 years. The retirement package would include insurance through age 65. No formal action was taken on the matter and will be considered at the January meeting.
In 2016, 24 teachers, administrators, and support staff took early retirement packages in the district.
