Winter conditions can add an extra obstacle to anybody when walking outside.
Owner of JET Physical Therapy Eric Turner says this time of year he begins to see more injuries related to falls. According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause for fatal injuries in Americans over 65 years old. Turner adds that those who have a hard time walking should be aware of what they can and can’t handle, “First and foremost, they need to be aware of their boundaries and limitations. If somebody doesn’t have very good balance, limit their trips and just go outside when necessary.” Many types of injuries can come from falls according to Turner, he says a simple fall can cause strains and sprains or be as severe as brain traumas. Not all falls result in injuries, but there are signs after a fall that Turner says warrants a visit to a medical professional. Symptoms such as not being able to put weight on an area of your body, any pain that prevents quality sleep, or limited arm mobility are signs that you should seek medical care.
