The Washington wrestling team had their first conference duel of the season last night in Fairfield, with the Demons taking the victory by an overall team score of 54-30.

Every single match of the night that wasn’t a forfeit was decided via the fall.  Things started off in the 160 weight class, with Washington’s Ayden Frazer pinning Nickel Iseman in 1:07.  After a Washington forfeit in the 170, then came the 182 match with Tristin Westphal-Edwards, who wasted no time from the opening whistle, as he got his personal score up to 14 against Fairfield’s Grady Flynn in the first minute of the match before getting the pin at 1:07.  The 195 was next, and out came Logan Escher, who pinned Wyatt Baker of Fairfield in 21 seconds.  The Demons were up 24-6.

Then the momentum shifted a bit.  Fairfield got another six points via the forfeit in the 220 weight class, followed by the heavyweight match with Washington’s Marshall Patterson getting pinned in a minute 27.  The Demons would get another six via the forfeit in the 106 match, and then Washington’s Matt Collett went up against Fairfield’s Jonah Cooper in a marathon match for the 113, with Cooper pinning Collett after 4:57 had passed.  The 120 match was over significantly quicker, with Fairfield’s Coyhn Roach pinning Brennan Murphy in 26 seconds to tie the team scores up at 30.

But then the Demons got the momentum back when 2017-18 state qualifier Walker Ikerd took the mat for the 126 match, getting the pin in just 23 seconds.  Cade Pohren would follow suit in the 132 match, pinning Gage Van Vleen in 49 seconds.  Garrett Ikerd went out there for the 138 and got his tenth straight win, sixth by the fall, by pinning Fairfield’s Logan Adam in 1:27.  Dillan Sanders and David Hora stayed unbeaten on the year as well in the 145 and 152 weight classes, respectively, to end out the night and give the Demons the duel 54-30.

The Demons will head to Mount Vernon and Keokuk on Saturday for varsity and JV tournaments, respectively, before coming back home for their next conference duel of the season on Thursday to face Keokuk.  Coverage of Thursday’s duel can be found on KCII starting at 6:00.
