Cattle will be flocking to Kalona Saturday for the annual market beef weigh-in for 4-H and FFA beef project members. The weigh-in will be held 8:30-11 a.m. at the Kalona Sale Barn. Washington County Fair Market Beef classes include purebred steers, crossbred steers, produce steers, returning bucket bottle market heifer and steer, market heifer, dairy steer, and single source steer. Ten calves may be weighed in for the county fair and outside events. Required information for purebred market calves for the county fair includes: breed identified, signed affidavit from the producer verifying the calf could be registered, or registration papers. Cost is $1.50 per ear tag for all beef.

Purebred calves being nominated for the Iowa State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben need breed identified, sire name, sire registration number, and a tattoo. Retinal scanning will be done for $8 per head.

Breeding heifers do not need to be weighed at the December weigh-in.
