The Mid-Prairie girls basketball team hosted Clear Creek Amana Tuesday night at Tim Grady Gymnasium in their annual Hall of Pride game.

The fans were treated to a classic with the Golden Hawks pulling out a 52-48 win in double overtime. Things were rocky for the Hawks early, they trailed 13-7 after one quarter and 25-15 at the half. The Clippers flustered the Hawks, forcing 12 turnovers and allowing Mid-Prairie just four first half field goals. After the game, Golden Hawk head coach Stephen Bender talked about the tough start and his team’s play in the second half “We talked about being tougher in the second half. So we said you have to adjust, get upset a little bit. Be strong with the ball and don’t get hurried. They dictated what we did on offense in the first half. We came out in the second half in a full-court press, trapping and forcing turnovers. We got buckets in transition and girls hit some big shots for us.”

Out of the locker room Mid-Prairie toughened up and took control, rolling to a run 21-2 out of the break including holding the Clippers off the scoreboard for the first seven minutes of the second half in taking a 27-25 lead into the final frame. Things were back and forth the rest of the night with the game tied at 38 at the end of regulation and 45 after the first extra frame. Mid-Prairie pulled away in the second overtime and secured the win with a late defensive stop on a Myah Lugar blocked shot. Following the contest, Lugar talked about the stop and win. “It was great, I thought we were really deep offensively. We moved the ball, girls got quality touches. We wanted to play tougher than we did in the first half. Get more rebounds and loose balls. It was nerve racking but really exciting to get the win. It felt really good.”

The sophomore was sensational in the win for Mid-Prairie, accounting for 25 points, including four three point goals and eight rebounds. The Golden Hawks also got 10 points and five boards from Maddie Nonnenmann and seven points and seven rebounds from Kessa Jones. All proceeds from the game were donated to the Ronald McDonald House in Iowa City.

The Golden Hawks open the season Tuesday at Durant.
