The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks found their first win of the season in week five, rolling through Central Lee 56-21 in their district opener on the road.

In a game heard on KCII, the Golden Hawks wasted no time taking control. Mid-Prairie turned away Central Lee on their first possession despite a 15 play drive, and promptly marched it 75 yards on 12 plays, capped by a 10 yard Justin Schwartz touchdown run. The Golden Hawks got the ball right back when Jack Baker intercepted Hawk quarterback Evan Pohren and Grant Boyse took a sweep 25 yards for six to double the Mid-Prairie lead. Central Lee found their answer on the ensuing kickoff when Tyler Hopp raced 90 yards to get Central Lee within 14-7. From there it was all Mid-Prairie.

The Golden Hawks scored 42 in a row including twice more in the first half with another Boyse touchdown run and a 23 yard scoring throw from Brad Tornow to Tom Butters to make it 28-7 at the half. Out of intermission the Golden Hawks got touchdowns from Schwartz, Kayden Reiner, Rex Peck and Connor Miller to finish the win. After the game, Mid-Prairie head coach Pete Cavanagh talked about his team’s performance and a team victory. “It was good to see all of the guys contribute. You’ve got a guy like Rex Peck who spends all of his time hitting people so other people can run. We’re able to get him a carry and he breaks it for a touchdown. Conner Miller same thing. I don’t know how many guys scored but it was quite a few. It’s momentum for next week. We’re finally at home. Our next opponent is a good one, but it’s good for our confidence. It’s good to see our kids smiling again after the first win of the year.”

Mid-Prairie outgained Central Lee 450-180 including 358 to 80 on the ground. The Golden Hawks were led by Justin Schwartz with 25 carries, 177 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Brad Tornow was five of 15 through the air for 103 yards and a score to Tom Butters who hauled in a pair of passes. Mid-Prairie is now 1-4 on the year and will host Williamsburg next week.
