September 1st marks the beginning of the 2018-2019 hunting season with the first day for squirrels, cottontail rabbits, and migratory birds such as snipe, doves, rail, teal, and canada goose in some areas.

As we enter the early part of the season, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources recommends squirrel hunters focus on the cooler parts of the day, early morning and late evening, and then shift to warmer parts of the day as the temperature cools. Hunters should look for timber with oak, hickory, and walnut trees that produce nuts squirrels use for food. Squirrel season lasts until January 31st, 2019.
